Your first night, in five steps.
You can start with the phone in your pocket. No telescope and no account needed.
Pick a night
Open Tonight. It scores the night and shows the clearest hours, so you only go out when it is worth it.
Learn the basics
Your first night sky needs nothing but your eyes. Camera basics for the night covers the exposure triangle and sharp stars, on a simulator you can get wrong as often as you like.
Find the sky
Explore shows places to go. Once you are there, hold up Sky to see what is above you. Tell someone where you are going, and take care in the dark.
Take the shot
Steady your phone, open Shoot and choose Not sure? Auto. It picks from tonight's sky and explains its choice. Tap Why these settings? and you are learning as you shoot.
Go again
Each night teaches you something. Take control of one setting next time, and move on when you are ready.
Before you start
Do I need a telescope?
No. A phone or a camera and lens is enough to start. Each course says what kit it suits.
Do I need an account?
No. Lessons, Tonight and Sky work without one. An account lets you back up and move between your phone and computer.
Are the lessons free?
Yes. Lessons are free.
What if I live somewhere bright?
Shoot has a City night sky mode, and the Moon is a good first target from anywhere. Explore can help you find somewhere darker when you are ready.
